Late-period Ozu (Almost his final film,actually) a generational family drama dealing with themes of changing times, duty, personal beliefs and ennui that is a bit more gentle and low-key than some might be expecting, if you were looking for a summation or a mission statement about life, but then, apologizing with a smile (as Setsuko Hara does here) is very much in Ozu's wheelhouse, not bombast (an important character dies off-camera at one point, that's about it for action) the Summery landscape and the bright colors (and surprisingly jaunty music) contrast sharply with the funeral atmosphere here, creating an effectively disquieting effect, and the introduction of Chisu Ryu's character-and his wife, as sort of an outside commentator on the drama that the Kohayagawa family are going through--the end result being a film that effectively sets up its own ambivalence about life---the only real certainty here being, of course, that things end, for better or worse.
